Sixty personnel and five A-10A aircraft
from the 74 FS (tail #s 1967, 1953, 0144, 1990, and 0194)
deployed to Goie del Colla, Italy, in support of Operation
ALLIED FORCE. The operation was a North Atlantic Treaty
Organization (NATO) air campaign against Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia intended to stop Serbian ethnic cleansing against
Albanians in the area. The United States’ commitment was
entitled Operation NOBLE ANVIL. |

relinquished command of the 23 FG to Col Joseph R. Wood.
Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Victor E. Renuart, Jr., commander
of the 347th Wing, Moody AFB, Georgia (GA), presided over the
ceremony. |

Hurricane Floyd, nicknamed "the storm of
the century," made landfall along the eastern coast of the
United stated and caused severe flooding in eastern North
Carolina. |

Following the hurricane, ACC’s Rescue
Coordination Center (RCC) at Langley AFB, VA, tasked the 347 WG
to send an HC-130 and two aircrews from the 71 Rescue Squadron
(71 RQS) to Pope AFB to help in efforts related to Hurricane
Floyd. The deployment also received local assistance from the 23

The 74 FS took 12 A-10A Thunderbolt II
fighters and more than 200 personnel from Pope AFB to begin a
three month tour to Al Jaber Air Base, Kuwait, in support of
OPERATION SOUTHERN WATCH. This constituted the first major
deployment since their support of OPERATION ALLIED FORCE over
the Republic of Yugoslavia in the Summer of 1999, based out of
Goia Del Colla Air Station in Italy. The A-10s flew a variety of
missions, including close air support (CAS), combat search and
rescue (CSAR) and joint maritime operations (JMO). |
